Born on 15 February 1957 in the city of Barnaul (the Altai Territory). He graduated from the Ryazan Higher Airborne Command School (RHACS) in 1978 and served in the Airborne Forces in the following positions:
from 1978 – the commander of self-propelled artillery platoon of the separate self-propelled battery of the 76th Guards airborne division;
from 1979 – the commander of platoon of the RHACS cadets; in 1984–1986 – the commander of paratrooper battalion of the 104th Guards paratrooper regiment of the 76th Guards airborne division.
After graduating in 1989 from the Military Academy named after M.V. Frunze continued military service in the Airborne Forces in the following positions:
from June 1989 to June 1990 – the deputy commander of the 300th paratrooper regiment of the 98th Guards airborne division;
from June 1990 – the commander of the 328th Guards paratrooper regiment of the 104th Guards airborne division;
July 1994 – September 1995 – the chief of headquarters / deputy commander of the 7th Guards airborne division.
After graduating in 1998 from the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Russia – the Commander of Staff / First Deputy Commander of Combined-Arms Army of the Moscow Military District, and from August 1999 – the Commander of the Army of the North-Caucasian Military District.
From 2001 to 2004 – the Head of the Administration of the Ulyanovsk Region.
In November 2004 was dismissed from military service and was appointed the Assistant to the Chairman of the RF Government.
From 2006 to 2007 – the Advisor to the Minister of Defence of the Russian Federation.
In November 2007 was accepted for military service under the contract and appointed the Chief of the Main Administration of Combat Training and Troops’ Service of the RF Armed Forces.
By the RF Presidential Decree of 24 May 2009 he has been appointed the Commander of the Airborne Forces.
Hero of the Russian Federation (1999).
Personal decorations: the Order of St. George 4th grade (2008), the Order of Courage, the Order of Service to the Homeland in the USSR’s Armed Forces 3rd grade, the Order of Military Merit and many Medals.
