Pacific Fleet seamen honoured the memory of Hero of the Soviet Union Mariya Tsukanova
Today in the territory of the Pacific Fleet’s Naval Clinical Hospital, at the monument to Mariya Tsukanova, a solemn meeting was held under the motto "Merciful Nurses are always in service", dedicated to the International Day of Medical Nurse and the ordinary anniversary of the Russian Red Cross.
The event was attended by representatives of this military hospital, Vladivostok Basic Medical College, the Red Cross’ workers, veterans of the PF medical service, pupils and students of educational institutions of the city of Vladivostok.
After the official part, the meeting’s participants laid flowers at the monument to Hero of the Soviet Union Mariya Tsukanova.
On 14 August 1945, Medical Instructor Mariya Tsukanova being in the strength of 355th marine battalion s participated in the landing to the Korean port of Seishin (now Chongjin). During the battle, she provided medical aid to the wounded, carried out of fire 52 wounded marines. Mariya was twice wounded, being unconscious was captured by the Japanese, which brutally murdered her. She was only 21 years old.
On 14 September 1945, the title of Hero of the Soviet Union (posthumously) was awarded Senior Sailor Mariya Tsukanova "for the exemplary performance of command assignments and for displaying courage and heroism in the battles against Japanese militarists".
Maria Tsukanova is enrolled in the lists of the Pacific Fleet forever.
