Russian Defence Minister emphasizes role of OSCE in curbing negative situation in Russia-NATO relations
The OSCE helps to curb negative development of the Russian-NATO relations, as Russian Defence Minister General of the Army Sergei Shoigu stated during his talks with OSCE Secretary General Thomas Greminger as part of the VIII Moscow Conference on International Security.
"Your participation in the Conference proves that the OSCE seeks to find ways in order to reduce tensions in Europe. Today, it is possible and necessary to talk about the need for new detente, since the reinforcement of the military presence on the Russia-NATO contact line and the scrapping of existing military dialogue plans can potentially cause incidents, ”the Russian Defence Minister emphasized.
"In many ways the OSCE help prevent negative development of the situation" he stressed.
According to Sergei Shoigu, despite attempts to politicize the dialogue in Vienna, Russia is interested in maintaining and developing it.
He said that at the Forum's plenary session, the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Security Council of Russia had given their assessments of the current international situation.
“Much attention was paid to Europe, since the situation on the continent largely determines security climate prevailing across the world,” Sergei Shoigu said.
He recalled that last year he had already met with Thomas Greminger.
"We discussed security trends in Europe, first and foremost extension of NATO's presence at the Russian borders and concentration of anti-Russian exercises. We strictly follow international obligation in arms control in Europe", the Russian Defence Minister stated.
“I think that today we will have the opportunity to discuss all these issues and exchange our impressions of what is happening in the world, as well as what we can influence together and what we can do together to improve the situation,” Sergei Shoigu concluded.
In turn, Thomas Greminger thanked Sergei Shoigu for the invitation to Moscow, the opportunity to address the forum, and to meet with the head of the Russian military department.
