Board session of the Russian Defence Ministry was held in Moscow
Today, the head of the defence department General of the Army Sergei Shoigu held a board session of the Russian Defence Ministry.
Leadership of the Russian Armed Forces, representatives of state power authorities and Public Council of the Russian Defence Ministry took part in the session.
According to the Defence Minister, recently the military-political situation has been escalated at the south-western strategic direction.
Mainly it is caused by NATO’s military presence expansion in the Eastern Europe, situation in Ukraine, and activities of international terrorist groupings including ones active in the North Caucasus region.
“In these conditions we have to take adequate measures,” stated General of the Army Sergei Shoigu.
The Southern MD has held more than 200 organization and standard action items aimed at rising capabilities of troops since 2013.
4 divisions, 9 brigades and 22 regiments have been formed, including 2 missile brigades armed with Iskander-M missile complexes. Number of contract servicemen has been almost doubled. Self-sufficient force grouping has been deployed in the territory of Crimea.
The Southern MD has received more than 4,000 pieces of new and modernized armament and military hardware. Bastion and Bal coastal missile systems as well as Novorossiysk and Rostov-on-Don submarines have been put on combat duty.
The Black Sea Fleet and the Caspian Flotilla have received small-sized missile ships armed with Kalibr, sea-based cruise missiles.
Moreover, troops of the district have received new aircraft and S-300B4, S-400, Buk-M2 air defence missile complexes, and Pantsir-S1 anti-aircraft artillery and missile systems.
The Board has also discussed issues of implementation of the 2020 Activity Plan by the Northern Fleet.
General of the Army Sergei Shoigu reminded “more than 2 years ago the Northern Fleet, interservice strategic formation, was formed in order to protect northern borders of Russia”.
Construction of unique close-cycle military towns will be finished on the Frantz Josef Land Archipelago and New Siberian Islands in 2016.
Airfield net is being recovered; joint situation coverage system is being created mainly in the interests of air defence.
Units of mobile rapid reaction forces are being trained in conditions of the Far North. Crews of submarines are performing under-ice training tasks.
