Negotiations of heads of military departments of Russia and Japan are held in Tokyo

Heads of military departments of Russia and Japan, General of the Army Sergei Shoigu and Tomomi Inada, are discussing prospects of bilateral military cooperation and possible reaction ways.

According to General of the Army Sergei Shoigu, a wide range of issues from prospects of bilateral military cooperation to assessment of situation in crisis regions were included in the agenda. “We are ready for a constructive and frank dialogue on all these issues,” Russian Defence Minister stated.

“Cooperation between the countries is being developed despite well-known difficulties,” Russian Defence Minister stated.

“In 2016, bilateral relations considerably intensified,” said General of the Army Sergei Shoigu. “It is very important that we managed to make their development progressive,” he added.

He noted that the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin had paid an official visit to Japan in late 2016.

“During his visit, a number of documents were signed concerning various fields of cooperation. In accordance with the decision to deepen political and security ties, made at the summit in December, today we are resuming the two-plus-two consultations,” said Sergei Shoigu. “It is also important that military ties are stepped up along with political relations,” he added.

He expressed his gratitude to Tomomi Inada for invitation to visit Japan and welcoming.

Earlier, Sergei Shoigu had laid a wreath to the monument to servicemen of Self-Defence Forces killed in the line of duty in peaceful time.

The second round of Russia-Japan consultations between Ministers of Defence and Ministers of Foreign Affairs is taking place on Monday.

According to Sergei Shoigu, Russia and Japan are to join their efforts to counter common threats.
