Ministers of Defence of Japan and Russia agreed to enhance confidence through contacts between General Staffs in course of the two-plus-two meeting. Head of the Russian military department General of the Army Sergei Shoigu stated about this at the press-conference in Tokyo.
The Russian Defence Minister stated that plan of cooperation between Russian and Japanese military departments included more than 30 different joint activities in 2017.
The head of the Russian defence department stated that the Russian leadership expected Japan to joint recovery process in Syria.
“We told our colleagues in detail about the situation in Syria, about humanitarian aid programme, medical aid programme and assistance with demining of the area. And we have offered to our colleagues to join our big programme in clearing the UNESCO heritage sites from mines and explosives,” said Sergei Shoigu.
According to the Russian Defence Minister, deployment of a division on the Kuril Islands is conducted only in the interests of defence of the Russian territories. It is not done against any country.
“This division was under formation for the past six years and it is being formed in three subjects of the Russian Federation: Primorsky Krai, Sakhalin region, and Amur region. It is being formed to protect the Russian Federation,” explained General of the Army Sergei Shoigu.
He also noted that the Russian borders would be protected from air and sea in 2017.
The head of the Russian military department stated that agreement signed with Japan on preventing military incidents remained valid. “There is no difficulties to sign it,” he added.
Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia and Japan, Sergei Lavrov and Fumio Kishida, as well as Ministers of Defence, General of the Army Sergei Shoigu and Tomomi Inada, held the second two-plus-two meeting and discussed issues of enhancing confidence in the Asia-Pacific region, deployment of the U.S. missile defence system in the region, joint naval military exercises as well as situation of the North Korea’s nuclear programme.
