Alpinist – Defender Monument opened in the Terskol Mountain Training and Survival Center
The Monument Monument to the alpinist – defender of the Motherland opened in the Terskol Mountain Training and Survival Center within the closing ceremony of the “Elbrus Ring” contest of the International Army Games - 2017.
"The monument, which for centuries have perpetuated a great exploit of the alpinist-defender. The location of the monument was well-considered. It was here, in Terskol in 1935 where the first school for training military climbers were founded," – said at the opening, state Secretary – Deputy Minister of Defence Nikolai Pankov.
According to him, in 1942, 12 mountain infantry brigades were established. During the Great Patriotic War, climbers and servicemen were engaged in heavy fighting with Nazi forces on Mt. Elbrus.
‘Their exploit will never be forgotten. We express our gratitude to the Studio of Military artists named after Grekov of the Ministry of Defence of Russia for this monument’, – said Nikolai Pankov.
