Russia’s and Uzbekistan’s defence ministers determined to strengthen counterterrorism cooperation
Today, the Russian Defence Minister held a meeting with his counterpart Uzbekistan’s Defence Minister Major General Abdusalom Azizov within the session of the CIS Defence Ministers Council.
‘A great work is underway to strengthen military and technical cooperation. Increasing threats caused by unstable situation in Afghanistan force us to cooperate closely in fight against terrorism and ensuring security in the region’, stressed Sergei Shoigu.
He also pointed out that Uzbekistan was a Russia’s strategic partner in the Central Asia. Over the last year, cooperation between the countries have been significantly consolidated. This regards first of all ensuring military security, strengthening combat potential of armed forces and training of military personnel.
Moreover, experts of both countries have agreed on proposals for cooperation that have been included in the draft of Russia-Tajikistan Defence Ministry Cooperation Plan for 2018.
Sergei Shoigu also thanked his counterpart for Uzbekistan’s support and participation in landmark events organized by the Russian Defence Ministry including the 6th Moscow Conference on International Security, Conference on military aspects of counterterrorism operation in Syria, and the Army 2017 International Military Technical Forum.
Sergei Shoigu have invited the Uzbekistan’s Defence Minister and state representatives to take part in the events organized by the Russian Defence Ministry in 2018.
According to the Defence Minister, four battalion tactical groups as well as a company one of the Armed Forces of Tajikistan assigned to protect Tajikistan-Afghanistan borders have been trained this year.
In order to increase combat capabilities, Russia is to supply armament and hardware to Tajikistan.
More than 560 servicemen of Tajikistan have been studying in the Russian Defence Ministry’s educational establishments.
The Russian military base in Tajikistan has organized training courses for junior specialists. Annually, up to 1,000 servicemen attend these courses.
General of the Army Sergei Shoigu added that CSTO CRRF were to hold exercise in Tajikistan in November, 2017.
As the Russian Defence Minister said, military control bodies and units of the Central MD as well as aviation were to be involved in the exercise.

В этом году прошли учения «Взаимодействие» и «Нерушимое братство» с коллективными силами Организации.
Military units and formations of Russia and Tajikistan take part in CSTO exercises regularly.
Head of the Russian defence department also noted that the Cooperation, Unbreakable Brotherhood, and Dushanbe – Antiterrorism exercises took place in 2017.
“Russia and Tajikistan have common aims in building up security and preserving stability in the Central Asia region. Our parties are paying much attention to cooperation in military and technical fields,” stated Sergei Shoigu.
In his turn, the head of Uzbekistan’s defence department also stressed that cooperation was to be strengthened in all spheres. Uzbekistan will exert any effort to ensure security on the CIS southern borders.
