Russian sappers, together with Lao colleagues, reconnoitered the mine clearance area in Xiengkhouang province

Russian military engineers of the International Mine Action Center of the Russian Armed Forces, together with members of the U-58 mine clearance unit of the People’s Army of Laos, reconnoitered the mine clearance area in Xiengkhouang province.

The sappers have to carry out humanitarian demining of 120 hectares of land near the city of Phonsavan for the further development of the transport infrastructure of the region. In the province there is the famous Plain of Jars - in 2019 this object was awarded the UNESCO World Heritage status.

Cleaning the area and the subsequent improvement of the infrastructure will increase the tourist flow to the historical sites of the region.

The Russian mine clearance team consists of 34 servicemen from the International Armed Forces Center of the Russian Armed Forces, who already have experience of wok in the Lao People's Democratic Republic. The servicemen are equipped with modern means of searching and detecting explosive objects, as well as Russian-made sapper protection equipment that surpasses foreign analogues.

One of the features is to search and defuse unexploded bombs and mines, which are located in the ground at a depth of 40cm to 2.5m in the area of five villages. In addition, sappers are greatly affected by the high temperature and humidity characteristic of the climate of this region.

Russian servicemen also visited a branch of the National Committee for unexploded ordnance control in the Lao People's Democratic Republic in the Phonsavan region, where they familiarized themselves with the samples of ammunition that they will encounter in carrying out humanitarian demining tasks.
