Born on May 21, 1955 in Saratov.
In 1977 he graduated from the Ulyanovsk Guards Higher Tank Command School with gold medal, in 1985 – from the Military Academy of Armored Forces with high honors, in 1996 – the Military Academy of the Chief Headquarters of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.
During his service from 1977 to 1982 he occupied the following positions: platoon officer, company officer, chief of the staff and battalion commander in the Kiev Military District.
From 1985 to 1994 – deputy commander of a training tank regiment, commander of a training tank regiment, deputy commander of a Guards tank division in the Moscow Military District.
From 1997 to 1994 – division commander, chief of the staff and army commander, deputy commander-in-chief of the Far-East Military District.
From 2005 to 2008 – chief of the staff – first deputy commander-in-chief of the Far-East Military District.
From 2008 to 2010 - commander-in-chief of the Far-East Military District.
From 2010 to 2014 – deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.
Appointed the Commander-in-Chief of the Army by the Decree of the President of Russia in May, 2014.
Participated in military operations.
Decorated with orders and 9 medals. In 2003 was awarded a diploma and Honorary Laude of the High Council of the Forum “Public Recognition”.
Has a wife and a son.
