Maneuvers Kavkaz 2020



In the period from 21 to 26 September 2020 in accordance with the training plan of the Russian Armed Forces for 2020, under the leadership of Chief of the General staff of Russian Armed Forces – First Deputy Russian Defence Minister maneuvers "Kavkaz-2020" will be held with the Southern Military District.
Maneuvers "Kavkaz-2020" is the final stage of the complex of measures for operational (combat) training of Russian Armed Forces for this year. 
In the course of the maneuvers, questions of the use of groupings of troops (forces) of the coalition of states in the interests of ensuring military security in the southwest of the Russian Federation will be worked out.


The main goals of "Kavkaz-2020" maneuvers are:

  • verification of the degree of readiness of the leadership and military command bodies of the USC of the Southern Military District, the command staff of military contingents, tactical (operational) groups to manage groups of troops( forces), formations and units in the course of joint operations to localize and resolve armed conflicts related to countering terrorism;
  • improving the compatibility and level of interaction between military command bodies and troops (forces) in the course of solving tasks to preserve peace, protect interests and ensure military security;
  • getting practice by commanders and staffs in the command of troops (forces) during the preparation and conduct of military operations in southwest strategic direction;
  • ensuring the readiness of Russian Armed Forces and partner states to protect national interests, increasing the level of interaction in solving joint tasks.

"Kavkaz-2020" maneuvers will be held in two stages. At the first stage, the military command bodies will conduct planning of military operations in the conventional military-political environment created by the maneuvers. Issues of interaction between the military contingents of the countries participating in the maneuvers on repelling air attacks, conducting reconnaissance, search and defensive actions will be worked out.
At the second stage, it is planned to solve the tasks of direct control of troops during joint combat operations. It is planned to conduct actions draw of land groups of troops, groups of aviation and air defense, forces of the Black Sea Fleet and the Caspian flotilla. In addition, the maneuvers provide for practical activities of the troops aimed at parcticing issues of deployment and conduct of territorial defence.
The main actions of the troops (forces) will take place at the internal ranges of the Southern Military District – "Prudboy", "Ashuluk", "Kapustin Yar", ground aviation ranges "Arzgirsky" and "Kopanskaya". In the waters of the Black and Caspian seas, the drawings will be held for episodes of actions by groups of the Black Sea Fleet and the Caspian flotilla, including with the participation of ships of the naval forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
In addition, military formations from Armenia, Belarus, China, Myanmar, Pakistan are invited to the maneuvers to practice joint actions as part of groups of troops (forces). In total, up to 1,000 foreign military personnel are invited.
Representatives of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Indonesia, Iran and Sri-Lanka plan to participate as observers.
In total, about 80,000 people are expected to be involved in the "Kavkaz-2020" maneuvers (including formations and units of combat, logistics and technical support, as well as air defence, navy and special forces units (National guard and The Ministry of the Russian Federation for Civil Defence, Emergencies and Elimination of Consequences of Natural Disasters). At the same time, the maximum number of personnel involved in military units that fall under the Vienna document of 2011 in the maneuvers, conducted under a single operational command, will be up to 12,900 military personnel. 
Up to 250 tanks, up to 450 infantry fighting vehicles and armored personnel carriers, up to 200 artillery systems and multiple launch rocket systems will be involved in the practical actions of the troops (forces) at the training grounds.
