The Russian Centre for Reconciliation of Opposing Sides is supervising an unprecedented and unique humanitarian operation in the Eastern Ghouta.

Over the past five days, 79,655 people have been evacuated via the humanitarian corridors from the Eastern Ghouta. More than 65% of its area has been liberated.

Russian officers are focused on safe evacuation of civilians from blocked areas as well as on delivering humanitarian aid from Russia to Syrians, who left the enclave.

Meanwhile, the Centre secured safe access of three UN humanitarian convoys to blocked suburbs of Damascus in March as part of the humanitarian operation. The convoys delivered more than 445 tons of cargo.

The Russian Centre coordinates its work with the UN, ICRC and SARC organizations.

“Despite regular attempts of terrorists to undermine peaceful initiatives in the Eastern Ghouta, the Russian Centre holds negotiations with leaders of armed formations in order to cease hostilities and prevent humanitarian disaster. All the taken measures have led to general stabilization on the outskirts of Damascus”, the Defence Minister announced.

He also emphasized that the Russian Centre for Reconciliation held humanitarian action in other parts of Syria as well.

Its main goal is to provide people with medical care, food supplies and the bare necessities.

In total, 3,870 people have been evacuated from western part of the Idlib de-escalation zone to Aleppo province via a humanitarian corridor organized by the Russian-Turkish-Iranian Joint Coordination Centre. Besides, 25,684 people returned back to Deir ez-Zor.

Recently their military forces have become more active in Syria. There is still possibility that terrorists can use chemical agents in order to further accuse the government troops of applying chemical weapons against civil population.

Sergei Shoigu reported that such three attempts had been disrupted over the past seven days.

“Russia reckons on its Western partners taking reasonable decisions to stop flirting with terrorists and support Russian peaceful initiatives in Syria”, Sergei Shoigu said. He also emphasized that Russia will carry on doing its best to stabilize situation in the region and urging all sides concerned to join constructive dialogue and cooperate to stop violence.

The Russian Minister of Defence also spoke on the Annual Presidential Address to the Federal Assembly that outlines objectives of this country for the near future.

In this regard, Sergei Shoigu stressed that the 2020 Activity Plan of the Russian Defence Ministry as well as the 2018-2027 State Armaments Programme are to be updated  in order to fully implement the instructions of the President.

It is important to consistently increase the share of modern armament, intensity of combat training and improve recruitment system.
