Scientific expedition vessel "Akademik Fedorov" was met in St. Petersburg after the Arctic expedition
Representatives of the Main Command of the Navy, the Navigation and Oceanography Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Russia met in St. Petersburg the scientific expedition vessel "Akademik Fedorov", which had returned from an expedition to the Arctic. The members of the expedition solved the tasks of conducting research for three months, of which two months in difficult arctic conditions.
During the expedition from August 18 to November 12, 2020, comprehensive bathymetric studies in the Arctic Ocean were successfully carried out.
Preparations for the expedition were carried out from June 23 to August 17, 2020.
The work was carried out in difficult ice conditions with ice concentration ranging from 8 to 10 points, the ice thickness reached 1.5–2 m.
The main objective of comprehensive research in the Arctic Ocean in 2020 was to obtain additional data on the seabed topography and the distribution of bottom sediments in order to prepare a digital model of the seabed topography.
The full scope of work stipulated by the assignment, bathymetric studies in the areas of the Gakkel ridge, Lomonosov ridge, and the southern part of the Chukotka plateau, has been completed.
