Russian Defence Minister General of the Army Sergei Shoigu meets with his counterpart from Armenia
During the bilateral meeting of the defence ministers of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Armenia, General of the Army Sergei Shoigu highlighted the main priorities of the peacekeeping operation in Nagorno-Karabakh.
"The main thing is to strictly observe the cease-fire regime in order to exclude provocations. I ask you to organize strict control over this," Sergei Shoigu stressed.
"We consider maintaining peace in Nagorno-Karabakh one of our priorities. We are taking all measures to strengthen stability in the region. You have already noted a number of works that are being carried out in this region: the exchange of bodies of the dead, and active work is underway to exchange prisoners and detainees so that they can return to their homes to their relatives and friends," Sergei Shoigu said.
"You know that we have provided safe corridors on the road to Stepanakert. We have provided transportation of all columns with refugees, and are engaged in restoring life-support facilities in Nagorno-Karabakh as a whole. As of today, almost 7,000 citizens have returned, this work continues, and I am sure that everyone who would like to return to Nagorno-Karabakh will be able to do so," the Russian Defence Minister said.
"Of course, now the issues of life in this region come to the fore — this applies to medicine, transport, energy, food. Therefore, today a delegation arrives in Yerevan, which is not engaged in military affairs, but our task is to ensure their safe operation. I think that we will be able to jointly implement the points of the statements that were made and signed. We must not allow anyone to break the fragile peace that exists today, I am sure that it will become stronger and stronger every day," Sergei Shoigu stressed.
In turn, the Head of the Defense Ministry of the Republic of Armenia, Vagharshak Harutyunyan, highly appreciated the actions of the Russian contingent of peacekeeping forces to restore peace in Nagorno-Karabakh.
"The ceasefire is being observed. Frankly, for this conflict, which has such a history and such a geography, forces were deployed so quickly and so effectively. I would like to express my gratitude to all the officers and generals who prepared this operation," said Vagharshak Harutyunyan.
