Russian Defence Minister calls for expanding access to military education
The Minister of Defence of the Russian Federation, General of the Army Sergei Shoigu, called for expanding the availability of military education in the interests of improving the quality of education of students, increasing the attractiveness of the university for applicants.
"It is important to continue contacts between the Ministry of Defence and the higher school to expand the availability of military training for students. Moreover, in matters of cooperation, we have significant developments and mutual interest. First, military training increases the attractiveness of the university for applicants, and for students-it is another incentive to improve the quality of their education," said Sergei Shoigu, speaking at the all — Russian scientific and practical conference on topical issues of cooperation between the Ministry of Defence and Civilian Higher Education.
Explaining how it works, the Minister of Defence noted that the current youth is growing active, inquisitive, receptive.
"Young people sincerely participate in patriotic actions, volunteer and Yunarmiya movement. They are not indifferent to environmental issues. The youth wing of the Russian Geographical Society and the participation of the younger generation in its actions — Geographical dictation, archaeological expeditions, activities to clean up the Arctic, and protect rare animals and birds — are steadily growing," the head of the military department said.
Similarly, students who study in military training centers, participate in projects, international military-technical forums, army games and all-army Olympiads, acquire new knowledge, skills and abilities, Sergei Shoigu added.
"It is natural that after this, young people tend to raise the bar in their basic studies," the Defence Minister said.
According to Sergei Shoigu, the military training units of universities have already become an outpost of military-patriotic and physical education of students and have a good potential for further development.
"We have established close cooperation with our pre-university educational institutions, organized support for the Yunarmiya movement and the network of educational and methodological centers of military-patriotic education Avangard, - said the head of the military department.
The Minister of Defence said that after the plenary session, the conference participants will have the opportunity to get acquainted with the work of such a center in the Patriot park.
"But, perhaps, the most important thing is that, having behind them training in the military specialty, young men start working immediately after graduation, without a break for service in the army. This reduces the outflow of young people from the regions, spurs professional self-realization and contributes to the solution of personnel tasks at the enterprises of the defence industry and the real sector of the economy, " Sergei Shoigu said.
The head of the military department, in particular, recalled that since 2013, the Armed Forces have created scientific, and since 2018 — scientific and production companies, in which the best students immediately after graduation work in their specialty, while simultaneously performing military duty. Currently, eight scientific companies operate on the basis of the military innovation technopolis ERA.
"Subsequently, many young people who have completed military service in them continue their research work in the Armed Forces and in the defence industry. Today, the system of military training not only successfully functions for its intended purpose — in the interests of personnel and mobilization support for the army and navy, but also is an effective tool for solving the problems of civilian universities and enterprises of the military-industrial complex. And it is advisable to develop this system, " the Defence Minister concluded.
