Russian Defenсe Minister General of the Army Sergei Shoigu inspects the exercise of the Russian Navy in the Mediterranean Sea


On February 15 this year Russian Defence Minister General of the Army Sergei Shoigu inspected the exercise of the Russian Navy in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, conducted as part of a series of naval exercises in operationally important areas of the oceans, as well as in the waters of the seas adjacent to Russian territory.

General of the Army Sergei Shoigu at the CSS centre of the Russian Navy in Tartous heard the report of the Commander-in-Chief of the Navy Admiral Evmenov on the implementation of joint combat training exercises by Russian ships and aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces to defeat ship groups of a mock enemy, as well as firing at sea and air targets using artillery and anti-submarine weapons.

The Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, Admiral Evmenov, reported to General of the Army Sergei Shoigu that more than 15 warships of the Pacific, Northern and Black Sea Fleets are involved in the exercise in the Mediterranean Sea - the missile cruisers Varyag and Marshal Ustinov, the frigates Admiral of the Fleet Kasatonov, Admiral Grigorovich, large anti-submarine ships Admiral Tributs, Vice-Admiral Kulakov and support vessels, as well as over 30 aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces.

During the exercise, measures are being practiced to search for foreign submarines, establish control over navigation in the Mediterranean Sea and the flight of aircraft over it.

The main focus of the ongoing exercise is to practice the actions of the Navy and the Aerospace Forces to protect Russian national interests in the oceans, as well as counter the military threats of the Russian Federation from sea and ocean directions.

More than 140 warships and support vessels, more than 60 aircraft, 1,000 units of military equipment and about 10,000 military personnel are involved in ongoing naval exercises.

As part of the active phase of the exercise, surface ships, submarines and naval aviation of the fleets, acting according to a single plan, practice combat training tasks in the waters of the Okhotsk, Black and Barents Seas.

Together with Sergei Shoigu, the Syrian Minister of Defence, Corps General Ali Ayyub, observed the progress of the exercise of the Russian Navy in Tartous.

At the CSS centre of the Russian Navy in Tartous, Sergei Shoigu also inspected the ship repair complex of the Black Sea Fleet, where he set tasks to further improve the infrastructure of the Russian ships' base station in Syria, and laid flowers at the monument to Admiral Ushakov.
