Sergei AvakyantsCommander of the Pacific Fleet, Vice-Admiral
Born on 6 April 1957 in the city of Yerevan in the family of an officer of the USSR Navy. He graduated from the Black Sea Higher Naval School named after P.S. Nakhimov (1980), Supreme Special Officer Classes of the Navy (1991), Naval Academy named after Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union N.G. Kuznetsov (1998), Military Academy of the RF Armed Forces’ General Staff (2007).
He served in the Northern Fleet as the commander of missile-and-gunnery department’s control section aboard major ASW ship Admiral Yumashev, commander of missile-and-gunnery department’s division aboard missile cruiser Admiral of the Fleet Lobov, commander of missile-and-gunnery department’s division aboard missile cruiser Marshal Ustinov, later her second-in-command and executive officer. From 1991 to 1996 — the commanding officer of missile cruiser Marshal Ustinov.
In October 1996 was appointed the deputy commander, in 1998 — the chief of headquarters / deputy commander and in 2001 – the commander of missile ship division in the Northern Fleet.
From 2004 to 2007 — the Chief of Staff / First Deputy Commander of the Northern Fleet’s Operational Squadron. In June 2007 he became the Chief of Staff / First Deputy Commander of the Novorossiysk Naval Base of the Black Sea Fleet, and in August of the same year was transferred to the Pacific Fleet to the position of the Commander of the Primorye Flotilla of All-Arms Forces.
In August 2010 he became the Chief of Staff / First Deputy Commander of the Pacific Fleet.
In May 2012 the RF Presidential Decree appointed him the Commander of the Pacific Fleet.
Personal decorations: the Order of Naval Merit, the Order of Service to the Homeland in the USSR’s Armed Forces 3rd grade, the Order of Military Merit, the Medal of the Order of Merit for the Fatherland 2nd grade, and many Medals.
